Growing Change: Huacahuasi’s Greenhouse Collaborative Update

In the village of Huacahuasi, access to fresh fruits and vegetables can be as limited as access to healthcare. Harsh weather, limited farmland, and high-altitude conditions make it difficult for families to grow the food they need to sustain themselves. That’s why we’re working alongside families in Huacahuasi to build sustainable, community-run greenhouses—safe spaces where nutrition, health, and opportunity can take root.

These greenhouses are more than just structures. They’re lifelines. They provide year-round access to healthy food, reducing rates of anemia and providing families the opportunity to generate income by selling excess produce. Every greenhouse is maintained by women-led teams, empowering local women as leaders in both their families and communities.

Your support makes all of this possible. From funding tools and seeds, to helping build entire greenhouses, every contribution helps families in Huacahuasi grow a healthier, self-sustaining future. These photos from the greenhouses tell the story of what’s possible when we work together:

Right now, the greenhouses in Huacahuasi are in a critical growth stage. The teams have been working hard to tend the plants, and we’re excited to share that the first harvest is almost ready. We expect to see fresh vegetables very soon—a tangible result of months of planning, building, and care.

This milestone represents more than just a crop of vegetables. It’s a step toward:
- Reducing anemia and improving nutrition for children and families
- Empowering women with leadership roles and income opportunities
- Building resilience in a community that faces many challenges
- Creating a model for sustainable agriculture in high-altitude regions

Here’s a video from our local partner, John, giving an on-site update:

The reality is that many families in Huacahuasi don’t have reliable access to fresh food. Without these greenhouses, their diets are often limited, which can contribute to anemia—a widespread issue, especially among children in the Andes.

By growing their own food, families can enhance their diets, improve their health, and even sell extra produce to generate a small, sustainable income. It’s a simple idea with a profound impact: food security, women’s empowerment, and economic resilience.

The greenhouses are more than just places to grow food; they are also spaces that promote community, learning, and collaboration.
