Healthcare Barriers in Huacahuasi
-
Economic Access
Monthly expenses account for 72% of community members’ local income. These expenses do not include healthcare costs.
-
Travel Time
The nearest health clinic to Huacahuasi is a 2 ½ hour walk through the Andes Mountains.
-
Iron Deficiency
As a result of limited access to dietary iron, 21.74% of children in the community suffer from anemia.
Why do these barriers matter?
The short answer: everyone should have accessible and affordable healthcare. The longer answer: when healthcare needs are not met, the foundations of a community begin to crack.
When women’s experiences are consistently discounted, not just their health needs fall behind. Their personal advocacy itself declines, and cycles of domestic violence are worsened.
When children lack proper nutrition, they don’t just feel unwell in class. They miss important milestones, affecting their physical and mental health long into adulthood.
These healthcare barriers impact every component of the Huacahuasi community. And so can our initiatives, rooted in the notion of healthcare as a complex issue.
A Community Solution: Huacahuasi’s Health Clinic
Community members of Huacahuasi, a rural village located in the Sacred Valley of Peru, experience elevated rates of malnutrition and anemia. Numerous preventable deaths have occurred because of the distance to the nearest clinic, and only about half of families have reported contacting the current health post in an emergency. The people of Huacahuasi were not satisfied with the state of healthcare in their region and identified a local clinic as an accessible and sustainable solution to their healthcare barriers.
What do we do?
Huacahuasi community members provided the vision for a local health clinic. Our goal is to, with your help, make that vision a reality. From projects that bolster female community members’ financial autonomy to greenhouses that sustainably diversify the local diet, we are partnering with the community to ensure that our response to healthcare access is community-driven, self-sustaining, and attune to the complex factors that characterize healthcare barriers.
-
In just 5 years, we have progressed from conversations with the community about their self-identified need for a clinic to preliminary plans and support from the Peruvian Ministry of Health.

We recognize that healthcare barriers do not stem from one source alone; factors such as gender and occupation* can heavily influence how one perceives, pursues, and accesses healthcare. Our initiatives are built with the recognition of healthcare as a holistic solution.

Why do we do it (and why should you)?
To answer that question, we sought responses from our team, who work every day to make our mission possible. Their thoughts?
On the one hand, we are are all human beings, regardless of the circumstances we happen to be born into. On the other hand, those circumstances are entirely random. No one chooses where they are born, their struggles, or their hardships; it is all a matter of chance.
From the position of privilege we hold —having access to healthcare, opportunities, and many advantages to varying degrees— the least we can do is to help those who do not, because neither of us chose the conditions that shaped our lives. Moreover, in today’s global landscape, it seems that none of our comforts or ways of life are guaranteed.
So, be the person you would hope existed if one day you found yourself in need of help.
