Today, residents must walk over three hours to reach the nearest clinic in Lares — a journey that has too often resulted in preventable illness and loss of life. Families and children face persistent challenges with malnutrition, anemia, and diabetes, alongside limited maternal health and family planning resources. With no local healthcare infrastructure and restricted emergency response options, only about half of families can reach medical help during critical situations. Despite these obstacles, the people of Huacahuasi share a clear vision for change of establishing a community-led health clinic that provides consistent, life-saving care close to home.
