Healthcare Shaped by Huacahuasi.
About Huacahuasi:
Nestled high in Peru’s Sacred Valley, Huacahuasi is a culturally rich village known for its deep traditions and resilient spirit. Only recently gaining access to running water, the community continues to face major barriers to basic healthcare.
Today, residents must walk over three hours to reach the nearest clinic in Lares — a journey that has too often resulted in preventable illness and loss of life. Families and children face persistent challenges with malnutrition, anemia, and diabetes, alongside limited maternal health and family planning resources.
With no local healthcare infrastructure and restricted emergency response options, only about half of families can reach medical help during critical situations.
Despite these obstacles, the people of Huacahuasi share a clear vision for change — to establish a community-led health clinic that provides consistent, life-saving care close to home.
Your support can help turn this vision into reality, empowering Huacahuasi to build a healthier, more self-determined future.
Healthcare Barriers in Huacahuasi:
-

Income Inconsistency
Monthly expenses account for 72% of community members’ local income. Many families in Huacahuasi lack stable income, making even basic healthcare costs—like transportation, medicine, or clinic fees—unaffordable. Strengthening economic access empowers residents to seek timely care and invest in their long-term health.
-

Distant Critical Care
The nearest health clinic to Huacahuasi is a 2-3 hour walk through the Andes Mountains. Cutting travel from hours to minutes would dramatically improve timely emergency response, maternal care, and treatment for acute conditions like severe anemia — directly reducing preventable illness and death in the community.
-

Iron Deficiency
As a result of limited access to dietary iron, 21.74% of children in the community suffer from anemia which in turn, limits their growth, learning, and immunity. Addressing the anemia issue in the community is vital to break cycles of poor health and poverty, ensuring every child in Huacahuasi can thrive.
-

Economic Challenges for Women
Over 30% of women in Peru have no personal income. Women who do earn tend to make around 30% less per month than men. The median full-time female worker earns approximately 70-75% of the salary of her male counterpart.
More than just a Clinic.

100% community-led initiatives like greenhouses are creating a more diverse diet and helping to reduce the risk of anemia in the community.
-

By building a level-one healthcare clinic within the community, we can reduce travel time from two hours to fifteen minutes — ensuring timely, dignified care for those who need it most.
-

The Artisan Marketplace is creating more economic stability for women in the community by providing them the opportunity to sell their crafts outside of the community.
